Savannah GA. Trip ~ 5-30-14

I went to Savannah Ga. for 3 days with a group of friends from church.   It’s a very fascinating city.  The downtown area is made up of 12 equal areas each having a park in the middle with a street around the park and houses on the opposite side of the street from the parks.  So you almost feel like you are going around in circles all the time, which in essence you are.

We had dinner here at The Pirate’s House which was at one time some pirate’s house.  The food was delicious.  Fried chicken, fried fish, Macaroni and cheese, coleslaw, collard greens, fried okra, corn bread and beans and the obligatory green beans . . . well you get the picture, and what did I expect this is the South!

This is Kate!!!   She came around to our table and introduced herself in a deep gruff voice wielding her gun and told us stories about the house.

After dinner we went on a trolley tour of the Haunted Houses in the downtown area and heard their stories.  The one above and below was one such house.

There were many modes of transportation in the downtown area.

Everyone waves at each other when they meet.  These peoples were not only waving but hollering hello’s at us and having a good time.  This is a connector road that connects one square area to another.

The homes in the downtown area are amazing and numerous.

This scene is repeated over and over again with all the moss hanging on the trees around many of the mansions.

This one is called “The Gingerbread House”

Keeping an eye on things.

IMG_1147

Shops are everywhere.

IMG_1150

Restaurants are everywhere also.

IMG_1166

This Cathedral’s spire is seen from almost everywhere in the downtown area.

IMG_1171

It’s very beautiful inside.

IMG_1172

It’s free for the public to come in unless they are having a service or a wedding.

IMG_1175

The chimes for the organ.

IMG_1183

We also took a tour of the river front area.

IMG_1184

These container ships can only come in at high tide, and a harbor pilot and 2 tugboats have to assist them.

IMG_1187

I love seeing these large container ships.

IMG_1189

That’s one of the tugboats following the ship.

IMG_1192

These shops are all up and down the river front area.

IMG_1193

They are interesting looking and unique shops.

IMG_1195

We were able to sit here and watch the boats come and go.

IMG_1198

After lunch Saturday we took “The Paula Dean Tour”  They told us all about her life and how she got where she is today.  I had heard most of it on the Food Network.

IMG_1135

Shops near her restaurant.  We had dinner at The Lady & Sons restaurant on Saturday night.  The food again was delicious, but pretty much the same fare as the night before.  Everything in Savannah comes with Fried chicken and green beans.  We had fried chicken with 4 of our meals while we were there and we all said we weren’t going to eat fried anything for awhile.

IMG_1199

More shops.

IMG_1200

We went to a play after dinner that was called “The Jutebox” and it was really good.  It had music that was played in jute boxes around the country during the 70’s and 80’s.  The musicians and cast were so talented.

This is my roommate, Sandra and myself in the lobby of the hotel we stayed in.

IMG_1206

On the way home just outside of Savannah in the town of Pooler Ga. we stopped at The Home of the Mighty 8th Air Force Museum.

IMG_1209

The fellow with the cane was our tour guide.  He's 93 years old.  He obviously was a part of the war effort flying over Europe in WWII.

IMG_1211

Cool planes!

IMG_1214

I found this picture interesting.  Under it was all sorts of information on how those who were downed were able to get out of enemy territory.  It told about all the various resistance groups and the names of their lines and connections that helped the men get back to safety.

IMG_1217

The cafe at the Mighty 8th Air Force Museum is where we had lunch.

I wished that I had more time to see it all and read more of the information but we were on a time schedule so I couldn't.

What was the weather like, I just picture it humid. Did you get any good fried chicken recipe tips?

The weather was very pleasant. You can see the clouds in some of the pictures which made it cooler with a light breeze. As far as chicken recipes I didn't ask for any, never thought to. Just ate it and enjoyed it.
